Are you "medicating" yourself with carbs?

Updated: Aug 3, 2023

Have you been struggling to lose weight for a long time? You try the diets, you try the workout regimens, but nothing sticks because nothing is working.

This was me a few months ago. I had stubborn weight that just wouldn't budge. I assumed it was because I wasn't eating healthy enough. I wasn't exercising enough. I just wasn't doing whatever, enough.

I had heard about emotional weight, but didn't really know how it related to myself. They talked a lot about what extra weight signifies. Fat is a layer of protection. We are trying to protect ourselves from a perceived threat.

Ok. But what do I do about it?

It wasn't until we started seeing a Nutritgenomic professional that it all really clicked.

He said, "I reviewed your diet history and I don't think your diet is what is causing your extra weight. I think your extra weight is emotional."

Uh....what?

He went on to explain the connection between carbohydrates and brain chemicals. Carbohydrates are fuel. Nothing more. Nothing less.

If I'm reaching for a carbohydrate and I haven't just done physical activity to warrant the need for extra fuel, my goal is not physiological, it's biochemical.

You see carbohydrates stimulate the neurotransmitter, or brain chemical, serotonin that help us feel good. So when you're feeling that carb craving and reaching for that sugary snack, that cookie at night, or that bread, pasta dinner or whatever it may be...your body is trying to boost that serotonin.

Main lining the feel good hormones without doing anything about the underlying emotional root. So the process happens over and over again. Leading to extra carbohydrates. What does your body do with all this extra fuel? You got it! Stores it as fat.

So when that craving hits try this instead:

Journal how you are feeling. Get it all out.

What am I feeling?

What is it trying to tell me?

What can I do about it?

And whatever else comes up for you in that moment.

Key is, Be a Gentle Observer of your feelings. No judgement. Just observe and say, "Oh that is interesting."

After you do that, then check in with that craving. You'll likely find this exercise extinguishes it's power over you.

Lowering your carbohydrate intake, and making that scale needle move in the direction you want it to.
