Expert Tips for Diaper Rash Relief

Diaper rash + upteen options for diaper creams + a million opinions from others = one confused new Momma. Sound familiar?

Turns out the equation is so much easier!! As I listened to the experts on this, the millions of opinions distilled down to - Mom knows best. Trust your instincts and use your observation skills.

Really it isn't more complicated than that.

With Little Man, his response to foods is a nearly immediate reaction on his little bum. He didn't have any other reactions to foods than a "red as a baboon" bum. Had we not known to look to foods right away, I think this journey may have been a lot more complicated.

That's right, a lot of times when kiddos are having issues with diaper rash or redness on their bums it has to do with their diets. (Barring that their diapers are being changed on a regular basis and their delicate skin isn't being subjected to long-term exposure to the acids in urine.)

The other night we had a mildly spicy dinner, and within an hour Little Man had a bright, angry red bum with sores that started to bleed at the slightest touch with a wipe during a diaper change. I felt so bad for him, I cried! He was of course in tears. And we weren't at home, so letting him run around without anything on, wasn't an option.

So we came home as quickly as we could and I got some of my homemade diaper cream on his sore bum. And within a half hour all the angry red was gone, and within a day or so the sores had completely healed too.

I felt so empowered that I could have this simple swap in our diapering routine that not only made our lives healthier by including zero synthetics, but offered real relief so quickly.

Here is our recipe:

Best Diaper Cream for Little Bottoms

1 Cup Unrefined Coconut Oil

1/4 Cup Shea Butter

1 Tablespoon Beeswax pellets

25 Drops Lavender

15 Drops Melaleuca (Tea Tree)

Melt Coconut Oil, Shea Butter, and Beeswax in a double boiler. Pour the melted mixture into a glass bowl and put in the freezer for 10-15 min (just long enough for it to harden slightly). Take the bowl/mixture out of the freezer, add the essential oils, and whip with a hand mixer until the desired consistency. Place in a covered glass container and store in in your diapering area.

P.S. This cream is amazing for those raw little noses during cold season.
