"Fat Burning Foods" and other Myths

The diet world has gone crazy in complicated something every one of us does every single day of our lives.


Eat this. Not that! Oh wait, this is better. No, this is better!


Give me a break!


Some of us just want to get healthier, have less pain, more mobility, more energy, sleep better, balance our hormones, and play with our kids!


You know have what used to be called a "regular life." Before things got overwhelmingly confusing.


I've been on this path for most of my life. I've struggled with my weight since I was a child. I never understood why I was heavier than my friends when I ate better and exercised more.


It wasn't until recently in my Integrative and Functional Nutritional degree program did I learn how my genetics have been playing a part in all of this. It makes me wish I could go back to my younger self and say, "It isn't your fault. You aren't lazy. Your weight doesn't mean anything about you or your worth."


I never understood that it was a bigger picture than just "calories in, calories out" kind of equation.


So I when I came across programs or cook books like the one below I thought, "Finally! This is what I need to not be fat anymore!"


"Fat Burning Foods" like here was that final secret that all my friends knew, but somehow escaped me.


If I just eat the right foods, I will burn fat and finally have the body I've wanted all my life.


It took me pursuing my Master's degree to finally understand that foods don't burn fat! Our metabolism burns fat.


And as long as we are on these lines, carbohydrates don't make us fat. Protein doesn't inherently make us fat. Even fat doesn't automatically make us fat!


Its consuming any of these macronutrients in excess that encourages our bodies to store the excess calories as fat!


There is no magic bullet. There is no secret. There is no complicated formula that you need to follow to be successful at weight loss.


That being said, there are a thousand ways to losing weight. Your job is to find what works for you, fits your lifestyle, and meets your needs and desires.
