Making the most of your trip to the Farmers' Market

Updated: Feb 4, 2019

Are you as excited as I am for the new Farmer's Market Season? Some of us lucky souls are living in a community with a year-round farmers markets. As we get our homestead up and running on the last frontier, we are excited to connect with them! The first step in Holistic Nutrition is finding quality foods! Easy peasy at a farmers market!

How to make the most of your trip? Menu plan! I know this took us a long time to get the hang of and we still struggle falling off the wagon. But when you menu-plan, you know exactly what you want to get when you get there. This leads to so much less waste because I know we aren't the only ones that get drawn in by the pretty colors and fun items, only to forget them in the fridge until its too late to use and they go straight to the compost pile.

One thing I have learned during my time in the government working with one of USDA's sister agencies is the "Organic" label isn't always the most imperative way to find quality produce. Truth is that label is expensive for small-scale farmers. Many vendors use the exact same processes as required under the Organic Label, but economically it just doesn't make sense for them to spend the extra money on the label. Just ask. Ask how they produce the food. Most vendors are excited to tell you all their tips and tricks! Those folks are great to buy from!

So over the years we have gotten everything from fresh, beautiful flowers, essential oils, beauty products, yummy veggies, and local beef and bison but now.....We get to have fresh caught seafoods at our local market!! Woohoo!!

What treasures will you find at your local farmers market? Just check out Google to find a farmers market near you!
