Have you heard these along the way? Have you always wondered about them?
Well I'm here to set the record straight on a few things. Things I've wondered about myself until learning the truth in my Integrative and Functional Masters program.
Myth #1: Avoiding Grains and Potatoes will eliminate all carbs.
Truth is, while most people associate carbs with these specific foods, nearly all plant-based foods contain carbs.
Myth #2: Carbs promote weight gain.
Truth is, any calorie-containing food consumed in excess can result in weight gain. And many times carbohydrate containing foods like veggies are not calorie dense. Meaning you will be full faster without as many calories, thus preventing weight gain.
Myth #3: Carbs increase inflammation in the body.
Truth is, there is no evidence behind this. In fact many of the phytochemicals (the good stuff in plants) actually have anti-inflammatory properties.
Myth #4: Fruit provides sugar and should be avoided.
Truth is, while fruit does contain natural sugars, it also contains fibers, nutrients, and phytochemicals. Fruit consumption has been linked with lower risks for many chronic diseases.
Myth #5. All carbs are created equal.
Truth is, different carbs are metabolized differently in the body. Naturally occurring sugar in fruit behaves totally different than added sugar in highly processed foods like candy.
There you have it! Five of the most common myths I've heard over the years. How about you?
