What Your Vet Doesn't Want You to know about Yearly Vaccination Schedules.

Is there such a thing? Are you really getting duped when you take your dog to the vet every year, religiously, following that little card you get in the mail (or text message as I got the other day). Turns out you might be...read on.

For the longest time I prided myself on being the A++ dog owner. Anything and everything the Vet recommended, I made sure my Harley got. Because "it is only the BEST for my baby." So when that card would come in the mail, I would dutifully call up the Vet, take time off work, and get my baby "up to date" on his vaccinations. While there I would make sure to stock up on the heartworm pills and flea & tick treatments to make sure I had enough to last the whole season through! And when they said, "tick season is lasting longer these days, you'll need a few more months of treatments." I happily replied, "Load me up!"

Then I started to quietly wonder...what is wrong with his immune system that these shots only last one year? How do they work, where you get the shot and then one year later there is no sign of having had it done??? Is this really right? Is that how dog's immune systems work? We are both mammals, how can their system be so different from ours?

I started asking those around me these nagging questions, and the best I got was a shrug and a "we've always done it this way," response. That wasn't good enough for me. I had to know what was going on here. But I was nervous to start bucking the system. I was nervous to step out and gasp...go against what the Vet might say. After all they are the ones with the Vet degrees, I am not. What do I know.....? I met some friends who were raw feeding their dogs, which was totally new to me. Why isn't kibble the best? It's what "I've always fed him." And I made sure its the best kibble the store had, because...Only the BEST for my baby! But we never talked openly about the vaccines, I was too worried about what they might think of me. To find out I was questioning medical authority.

Driven by the need to have answers for my baby, I started Googling my questions. Nowadays you can find a lot of information on vaccines and a lot of conflicting information. But back in 2012 there wasn't as much and you had to dig deep to find what little was published on the internet.

My searching led to our Homeopathic Veterinarian, Dr. Falconer. I bashfully asked my friend if she would ask her mom, to see if her mom had heard of this man. Turns out, it was their Vet too!

I spent countless hours pouring over his blog. I couldn't get enough. I learned so much, and my animals today have benefitted so much from the knowledge passed on by this doctor. What I quickly learned was, there were studies happening (in my home state of Wisconsin) that showed the rabies vaccine, if given once after the age of 16 weeks, likely confers lifetime immunity. Life. Long. Immunity.

WHAT?!?!?!?! By this time Harley had already received THREE vaccines and he was only 3 years old! I went on to read about the health risks of giving more vaccinations than needed....my heart started to sink.

Had I unknowingly made my best friend in the whole world, sick? Had I shortened his life span with me in this life? Had I caused him suffering? My heart could barely take the answer. Yes to all of them. I had done this to him. He only received the care that I sought for him, he had no choice. And I had caused him pain, suffering. My best friend, my confidant, the light of my life, my absolute biggest blessing. He did all that for me. And I hurt him. I still tear up thinking about this.

This is why I want to make sure every. single. other. dog. momma and pappa. knows. the truth!
